Mary Kirkpatrick, LMT (Licensed Massage Therapist)
I originally studied at Sarasota School of Natural Healing Arts in Sarasota, Florida in 1982-83 and was licensed in the State of Florida in 1983. After moving to Oregon, I did further study at East-West College in Portland, Oregon & obtained my Oregon license in 1987. I have studied many different modalities since obtaining my license. A partial list will follow, but my current practice focuses on Swedish Massage & Raindrop Therapy with sound as an optional addition. My original studies focused on Swedish Massage--this is what most people think of as massage. Here is a partial list of modalities that I have studied--Accutonics, Sound Therapy, Sport Massage & British Sport Massage, Hot Stone Therapy, Lomi Lomi, Bowen Technique, Anma, Chair Massage, Trigger Point Therapy, Polarity, and Cupping.
I had many hats before doing Massage Therapy. I received my degree in Elementary Education from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and taught for several years. I also have done Social work for Children's Services. Neither of these fields felt like a perfect fit for me, so I explored a variety of other jobs. I have had a long-time interest in complementary health & healing modalities & wanted to explore doing massage therapy. I put myself through massage school by working in a health food store & cleaning homes. Once I started learning Massage, I knew that I had found my calling--my natural ability. I feel that prevention is much easier and fun (for both practitioner & client) than cure and therefore, encourage people to set up a regular schedule of massage. Once a week to once a month seems to help most people. Massage Therapy can be an important part of your health maintanence program. It is like a mini checkup. Stress is a huge factor in so many illnesses that you owe it to yourself to take some time for yourself & let the stress go!
There are many things that I love about my work. It is thrilling for me to see people be able to make positive change in their life. I love the relaxed, at ease look that people have after receiving Massage or Raindrop Therapy. I love that they can breathe deeply again. Before they tell me how they feel, their expression lets me know that they are feeling better after a session. I also do some HypnoTherapy & NLP (NeuroLinguistin Programing--and I love assisting people to use their own mind to make positive changes in their life!
In my personal life, I love my family & friends. Going to the coast & walking on the beaches--especially tide pools--are two of my favorite things. Rather late in life, I have come to love taking photos thanks to digital cameras. I enjoy traveling both with friends that I know & new friends that I meet through trips from Petersen Barn & Campbell Center & then I love coming home again. Since coming to Eugene, I have been to my first Ballet &LOVE it & have seasons tickets! I volunteer as an usher at the Oregon Contemporary Theater & Cabaret Theater. I also volunteer at RiverBend Hospital making baby afgans for the neonatal unit & working with the program called No One Dies Alone.
I look forward to meeting you!
